Explore the differences between carbon steel and stainless steel flanges in terms of material composition, corrosion resistance, strength, and applications. Learn which forged flange is right for your project.
1. Material composition
Carbon steel flange: mainly composed of carbon and iron, with a high carbon content, usually between 0.08% and 2.11%, and may contain a small amount of sulfur, phosphorus, manganese and other elements.
SS flange: The main components are chromium, nickel and other elements. Common stainless steel flange materials include 304, 316, etc. These elements give stainless steel good corrosion resistance.
2. Corrosion resistance
Carbon steel flange: Due to the low alloy content, it is easily oxidized in a corrosive environment, causing rust and corrosion, especially in a humid, acidic or alkaline environment. Use may be restricted.
SS flange: It has excellent corrosion resistance and can be used for a long time in a humid, acidic or alkaline environment without rust or corrosion. It is suitable for use in chemical, pharmaceutical manufacturing, seawater desalination and other fields.
3. Strength and pressure resistance
Carbon steel flange: It has high strength and pressure resistance, and is suitable for some engineering projects with high strength requirements, such as petroleum, chemical, power and other industries.
SS flange: The strength and pressure resistance are relatively low, suitable for some small and medium-sized engineering projects, but can still meet the needs in the general construction engineering field.
4. Appearance and surface treatment
Carbon steel flange: Usually has a black or gray appearance, the surface may be slightly rough, mainly used for some internal pipe connections, and the appearance requirements are relatively low.
SS flange: It has a silvery-white appearance and a smooth surface. It is often used in engineering projects with high appearance requirements, such as architectural decoration, food processing and other fields.
5. Cost
Carbon steel flange: The manufacturing cost is relatively low, because carbon steel materials are cheap and easy to process, suitable for applications with limited budgets.
SS flange: The manufacturing cost is relatively high, because stainless steel materials are expensive and difficult to process, but in long-term use, due to its strong corrosion resistance, the frequency of maintenance and replacement is reduced.
6. Application scope
Carbon steel flange: It is suitable for some engineering projects with high strength requirements and low appearance requirements, such as petroleum, chemical, power and other industries.
SS flange: It is suitable for some engineering projects with high corrosion resistance requirements and high appearance requirements, such as food, medicine, marine and other industries.
