The failed parts were characterized for crack and fracture morphology using metallographic microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Electron energy spectrum analysis was conducted to determine the chemical composition of the base metal, weld, heat affected zone, and corrosion products.
The results indicate that pipeline leakage is attributed to sensitization treatment during welding, leading to rapid intercrystalline stress corrosion cracking under the combined influence of chloride and sulfide solutions.
